Makerspace: Making Musical Harmony Visual

October 15, 2015

Harmonograph2We have a Harmonograph, built by the McCabe Family, on loan in the Makerspace. A Harmonograph is a machine that displays images of overtone and simple-ratio harmonic resonance on paper. In other words, it draws musical harmonies like a Spirograph using swinging pendulums and weights.

Students in various grades will have the chance to plan a pattern and test their plan on the Harmonograph. A larger version of this machine was on display at the Art Hop in Burlington and at the Champlain Mini-Maker Faire at Shelburne Farms. If you have never seen one, you should stop by the Makerspace and check it out!
