Makerspace: Creating STEM Confidence

March 30, 2015

DSC_9459-XLThe eighth grade entered the Google “Town History in 3D” SketchUp competition. The students broke up into groups to bring different areas of the project to completion including signage, files, 3D printing, documenting and media. Part of the signage work is using a scroll saw and soldering electronics. The girls were particularly interested in working the saw.

One girl in particular mastered the saw, trained others, and became the first person others went to with questions. Students organically used the room; a natural happening… specific tasks were neither assigned nor intentional. What was intentional was how the room was set up, and the project.

The new Mater Christi Makerspace is about building confidence, empowering students, and laying the foundation for a lifelong love of STEM.
