March 8, 2016

Mr. Patrick Welsch, grades 6-8 English teacher, invited Mater Christi’s classroom spelling contest winners to a MCS middle school spelling bee. A few weeks ago, Mr. Welsch had held spelling contests to determine which students would be eligible to participate in the school’s spelling bee.

The school bee was held on February 18, with the following classroom winners as participants:

  • Julien Buttolph 6T, Colchester
  • Jacob Rubman 6W, Burlington
  • Sara Beth Marroquin 7M, South Burlington
  • Tyler Rowley 7L, Milton
  • Maddie Sawyer 8W, Shelburne
  • Kian Arani 8T, South Burlington

The School winner of the bee was Kian Arani. This is the second year in a row that Kian has won the MCS spelling bee.

On March 23, Kian will gather with other school winners for a statewide individual spelling bee at the McCarthy Arts Center, Saint Michael’s College, in Colchester. Winner of this competition will participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in late May in Washington, D.C.

The state contest is hosted by the state Agency of Education, the Vermont Principals’ Association, the Vermont Humanities Council and The Times Argus and Rutland Herald.
