Discovering personal greatness in pre-school through grade 8 students - Burlington, Vermont

M.C. Baker

I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania and attended Catholic schools through 12th grade.  I received my Masters of Architecture from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1993.  I enjoy traveling and have spent years living and working abroad. I was a Rotary Scholar in Harare Zimbabwe and completed a tour of duty with the US Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea.  My love of teaching began while working on school designs in my previous career. My passion for connecting with cultures and being a lifelong learner has continued throughout my career.  My husband and I started a school in Papua New Guinea and I knew that I wanted to someday get into education. I received my Teaching license through the TAP program. I hold a Level 2 H.Q.T. Art Educators License.  I have been teaching Art for over 15 years (Colchester Middle School, Center For Technology, Essex, Williston Central School, St. Michael’s College, and Fletcher Elementary School). I am a member of the Red Clover Committee (part of the Department of Libraries) that nominate 10 picture books and promote reading in Vermont.  I believe that students thrive when they are given the opportunity to add complexity to projects and have a growth mindset in their learning. I enjoy connecting art with other disciplines. Art connects the dots and makes learning more engaging. In the Art studio, you will see projects like african galimotos and wire weaving, digital textile design, lampshade design incorporating circuitry and energy flow.

My hobbies include traveling, water and snow skiing (Level 2 PSIA SKi Instructor), walking with a friend, spending time with my family, and being creative with my daughter (who also attends Mater Christi!).
